EXTERIOR
The exterior of this vintage Spartan is mostly original and intact. It still has both of the original wheel skirts which are often missing. It does have some minor exterior damage but overall it has a pretty decent exterior shell. This trailer is built like an airplane with riveted construction for long life and durability. It has aircraft grade aluminum that can be polished up to a mirror like shine.
Frame & A-frame: Has surface rust but everything appears to be good and solid.
Dents, scratches & damage: Has some minor damage but overall the exterior shell is in decent condition. (See Photos)
Entry doors: Has the original entry doors with riveted construction and the cool port hole style window. There is some damage at the front door where someone tried to break in to the trailer. Both locks will need work or need replaced. Rear door will need striker plate moved with a screwdriver or small crow bar to open door. We do have a nice retro-fit lock that works great on our parts e-store. No keys.
Steps: Both original steps are missing but the steel brackets are still there. The step brackets are rusty but still look to be in decent shape. We do offer original style reproduction steps on our e-store.
Front hoist: No, but it has an old dolly system which was designed to help carry the hitch weight. Dolly is rusted and will need work.
Hitch coupler: Yes, but should be replaced. Current coupler can be locked onto hitch ball but you will need a wrench and socket to tighten it up.
Roof: Is dirty but there is no apparent damage. Has all 3 of the original roof vents.
Screen doors: Front one is missing and rear one is there and in fair condition.
Exterior lights: All the original KD-540 marker lights are missing or broken. We do have old style tear-drop lights that can replace these. It has both the original KD-520 tail lights with good bezels and good glass lenses. It has the original license plate light and bracket and the glass lens is good. Original lights are un-tested but a set of temporary tow lights do come with the trailer so it can be towed home safely.
Underbelly: Has the original underbelly which was a fiber-board type material and is about 50% intact. We usually just tear this off and under-coat the bottom of the trailer.
Windows: All 3 of the original plexiglass windows are missing from this trailer. This is a late model 1946 Manor which has the radius corner front windows like the 1947-1950 Manors have. Most of the 1946 Manors had square cornered windows in the front. We do have reproduction windows that will work on this trailer which are made from UV stabilizer polycarbonate which is much better than the original plexiglass (acrylic) which were originally in them. Due to the window design it would be best to use are standard gasket and lock strip rather than the over-sized gasket and lock strip which we normally recommend.
The rear window is rusted out and will need replaced or repaired. All the slider windows are there with no broken glass but these windows will need need channels with felt strip. We do offer these products on our parts e-store. There are no screens on the opening windows.
INTERIOR
The original interior is about 75% intact and had mahogany wood work. The wood work is not in very good shape but is very nice to have for patterns. As you can tell from the photos there is a lot of water damage.
Cabinets & closet doors: original but several do have severe de-lamination especially at bottom.
Catches: Original
Countertops: Has the original aluminum countertops and backsplash which has oxidation but I did not see any holes.
Floor: Has the original floor which is a soy bean based plastic of some sort. Floor is about 90% good. A lot of people just put new plywood right on top of the existing floor so they have a good smooth surface for the new floor covering.
Floor covering: None
Table: No, it originally had a freestanding wood drop leaf table. I may have a vintage freestanding table that would work in this trailer.
Unit sleeps: Currently no beds but there is room for 4 persons.
Walls & ceiling: Has the original Mahogany paneling which is in poor condition but works great for a pattern.
RUNNING GEAR
Has the original running gear with the exception of new tires and wheels. Wheel bearing were sprayed with WD-40 and stayed good and cool on the trip home. Wheel bearings were not inspected and re-packed with grease.
Axle/Springs: Has the original axle with leaf springs. They have surface rust but everything appears to be good and solid.
Dry weight: Factory spec. weight was 3700# so I'm sure this one is lighter than that now with missing appliances.
Hitch ball height: Approx. 18"
Safety chains: No
Hitch weight: Approx. 370#
Hitch ball size: 2"

Old friend
Doesn’t look like this now! Gutted, rust removed, new 50 amp AC with 12 volt wiring; insulated; vapor barrier; air conditioned; new front windows; seams sealed; new door hinges: and the list goes on. Bathroom coming. Dan Piper said there’d be a lot of work, and he was right. But it’s inching along. Glad we bought it, even at its worst stage.
