EXTERIOR
The exterior of this vintage Spartan is mostly original and very straight. It has some minor dents and dings but nothing major. It is built like an airplane with riveted construction for long life and durability. It has aircraft grade aluminum that can be polished up to a mirror like shine.
Frame and A-frame. The A-frame on this trailer was very rusted and in horrible condition. We added our a frame repair kit so it could be towed home safely. The Spartan A-frames were famous for being too short so any good welding shop should be able to replace this A-frame with a longer version. All other areas of the frame that were accessible for inspection had surface rust but appeared to be good and solid.
Dents scratches and damage. The worst dent on this trailer is on the front right corner down low. Some of this dent could be pushed out from the inside. There are some rips and dents on the bottom wraps and rub rails but otherwise the body is pretty straight. We do sell new rub rails on our website.
Entry door front. Has the original aluminum entry door with riveted construction and the cool porthole window. The exterior skin of the door has several small dents and scratches, mainly down low. It is missing the original H-20 exterior handle. It does still have the original lockbox on the inside of the door which seems to be in working condition. Door still has the original interior vinyl cover which is shot but will work good for a pattern. Door will need new seals.
Entry door rear. Has the original aluminum entry door with riveted construction and the cool porthole window. Door is missing the H-20 exterior handle but the rest of the lock hardware is there and in working order. Exterior skin of door is in very good condition. Door hinge is very rusty and needs to be lubricated. Door will need new seals. No keys for either door.
Screen doors. Has both the front and rear wood screen door which are in fair to poor condition. These either need to be rebuilt or replaced.
Entry steps. Both slide out entry steps are missing. The brackets are still there but are rusty and bent up and will need some work. We do offer the new reproduction slide out steps on our website.
Front hoist. Has the original front hoist but is rusted and froze up.
Hitch coupler. Has the original hitch coupler which has surface rust but is in good working condition. Takes a 2” ball.
Roof. Has the original cambered roof with no obvious damage. A cambered roof is much better and stronger than a flat roof. It sheds water better and can hold up to heavier snow loads in winter climates. Has all four of the original aluminum crank up vents which do open and close. There is a line of tar on the roof where an awning or a room addition used to be. This is barely visible from the ground .
Exterior lights. All four of the KD 540 marker lights are missing or in bad shape. It does have the original KD 520 tail lights with glass lenses. Glass appears to be in good shape. Original lights are untested, however temporary tow lights have been added in the rear so the trailer can be towed home safely.
Underbelly. Has the original aluminum underbelly which is approximately 80% intact. We removed the very front panel of the underbelly to do the A-frame repairs but we did save the aluminum for a pattern. Underbelly does have some small holes, rips and loose panels.
Windows. Has all of the original windows which are complete with hardware but some are missing screens. Sliding windows will need new felt channels which we do have on our website. Rear window has a piece of glass missing in the corner. Front three plexiglass windows are all there but are old and needing replaced. We do sell these new windows on our website which are made of polycarbonate, which is much more durable than plexiglass. All windows will need new seals.
