EXTERIOR
This was the first year for the Spartan that became known as the Double Ender. Double Enders were built in 1953, 1954, and 1955. These trailers had the same body style at the very front and the very rear of the trailer. They had a series of three windows for a perfect view. The exterior of this vintage Spartan is very original, intact, and complete. The body is in pretty decent condition but there are some small flaws and dents. This trailer is built like an airplane with riveted construction for a long life and durability. It has Aircraft grade aluminum that can be polished up to a mirror light shine.
Frame and A-frame. Both sides of the A-frame had rust holes so we have added our A-frame repair kit to both sides. The rest of the frame, which is accessible for inspection has surface rust but I did not see any problems.
Dents, Scratches, and Damage. This trailer has several small dents, dings, and flaws but none are real major. See photos.
Entry Door- Front. It has the original aluminum entry door, which has the cool porthole style window. It has the original Bargman lock and lock box, which is in working condition but we have no keys. The aluminum skin on the door has some holes from a hasp. It also has some small dents but overall is in decent condition. The door will need new seals.
Entry Door- Rear. It has the original aluminum entry door, which also has the cool porthole style window. It has the original Bargman lock and lock box, which is in working condition but we have no keys. The aluminum skin on the door has some holes from a hasp and some small dents. This door will also need new seals.
Steps. Both of the original steps are missing but both of the doors still have the brackets for the steps. The brackets for the front door step are bent up a little bit. We do offer the new slide in steps which are built like the original ones on our website.
Front Hoist. No.
Hitch Coupler. Yes. It has the original hitch coupler with a 2 inch ball. It is in working condition.
Roof and Vents. It has the original cambered aluminum roof. A camber roof is much better than a flat roof. It is stronger, it sheds water better, and can handle heavier snow loads in winter climates. The roof is dirty and has some small dents and dings but nothing major. No tar or roof coating has been added to roof except around the furnace vent. It has all of the original aluminum vents except for 2 which are both covered to keep water out.
Screen Door. Front- It has the original wood screen door, which is in fair condition however the original screen door hinges are missing so they have just added some strap type hinges which don’t work that great. We do offer the new hinges on our website.
Rear- It has the original wood screen door, which is in fair condition this does have the original hinges which are in good working condition.
Exterior Lights. It has almost all of the original exterior lights. It has all four of the KD 540 marker lights with glass lenses and stainless steel bezels. All the glass lenses appear to be in good condition. It has the original Bargman Trail-lite #2 taillights, which also have glass lenses and stainless steel bezels, which are in good condition. The original Bargman license plate light is missing but the bracket is still there. The original lights are untested but temporary tow lights have been added to the rear so that the trailer can be towed home safely.
Underbelly. It has the original enclosed underbelly, which they used a hard board type material. It is approximately 60% intact.
Windows. It has most of the original windows. The front and rear center windows are the original glass curved windows, which are in good condition. The curved corner Plexiglas windows in the front and rear are in pretty rough shape and will need replaced. We do offer these windows made from Lexan on our website. The original picture window in the living room is in good condition. The smaller windows, which open and close are all there but some are missing some hardware and some have Plexiglas instead of regular glass. There is some loose window hardware in one of the cabinets. All windows will need new seals.
INTERIOR
The interior of this trailer has been altered a little but the kitchen, bath, and rear bedroom are still intact. This trailer is very dirty and needs a major cleaning.
Cabinet and Closet Doors. Most of the original cabinets, closet doors, and drawers are still there however I believe a few of the cabinets have been removed which were between the front door and the stove. All cabinet and closet doors are in good condition and most of them have the original hardware.
Countertops. The kitchen countertops and backsplash have been covered with linoleum, which is in fair shape.
Floor. The floor is solid in all areas except in the living room area there are soft spots or plywood missing on both sides under the windows.
Floor Covering. It has both carpet, 9 inch tiles, and linoleum. All floor coverings are in pretty rough shape.
Table. No, but there is plenty of room for a freestanding table.
Unit Sleeps. Currently only one bed is in the trailer however there is room for 4 to 6 people to sleep.
Walls. It has most of the original Birch paneling on the walls and ceiling, however a couple of wall panels are missing in the living room. Most of the birch paneling is in good shape, however there are a few panels with water damage which is delaminating.
RUNNING GEAR
Running Gear. It has the original running gear with the exception of brand new tires and wheels. We pulled the grease caps and it looked like fresh grease so we did not repack the wheel bearings. We did tow the trailer over 250 miles with no problems.
Axles and Springs. It has surface rust but everything appears to be good and solid. This has a Linco brand axle, which uses coil springs for independent suspension.
