EXTERIOR
The exterior of this vintage Spartan is very original, very complete and very straight. It has all of the original windows, doors and vents which are in good shape. It is built like an airplane with riveted construction for a long life and durability. It has aircraft grade aluminum which can be polished up to a mirror like shine.
Frame and A-frame. Has an electronically welded double perimeter frame with 5 inch rolled steel U-channels running the complete length of the floor on 20 inch centers reinforced by steel U- channel crossmembers below. Structurally engineered to produce the highest rigidity and durability without excess weight this revolutionary frame design also permits the use of large heating and cooling air ducts by providing an obstructed space the complete length of the floor. The frame and A-frame appear to be good and solid in all areas accessible for inspection.
Compartment doors. No.
Dents scratches and damage. This trailer has a few very small dents and scratches but overall the exterior of this trailer is in great condition. The is a small dent on the streetside rear that is not shown in any of the photos. This dent happened when the trailer was transported. The very last photo shows this damage, I believe it has been patched.
Entry door front. Has the original aluminum entry door with rectangular window. The aluminum skin on the door is in good condition but is pushed in and creased at the bottom corner. It has the original Bargman brand L-66 lock which is in working condition and does have two keys. It still has the original vinyl cover on the interior of the door. It is in fair/poor condition but would work great for a pattern. Door has original seals which should probably be replaced.
Entry door rear. Has the original aluminum entry door with rectangular window. The aluminum skin on the door is in good condition with only a few very small dings. It has the original Bargman brand L-66 lock which is in working condition and does have two keys. It still has the original vinyl cover on the interior of the door. It is in fair condition but would work great for a pattern. Door has original seals which should probably be replaced.
Screen door front. Has the original aluminum screen door which is in good condition. It has the sliding screen in the center for access to the interior door handle. That screen is popping out of the frame and will need replaced. Has an aluminum screen door guard for the bottom screen to help prevent damage to the screen.
Screen door rear. It has the original aluminum screen door which is complete and in good condition.
Steps. No. I don’t believe the Carousels had mounted steps since they sit so high off the ground.
Front hoist. Yes. Has the original front hoist which is in good condition.
Hitch coupler. Yes. Has the original hitch coupler with 2 5/16 inch ball. The coupler is in good working condition.
Roof and Vents. It has the original aluminum cambered roof. A cambered roof is much better than a flat roof because it sheds water better and can hold up to higher snow loads in winter climates. The roof does have roof coating on it which extends around the top radius. We scraped all roof seams and vent seams and re-sealed them with a good quality roof coating.
Exterior lights. It has all four of the original marker lights which have steel bases and glass lenses. The glass lenses all appear to be in good condition. It has the original license plate light and bracket which is in good condition. It has newer stainless steel tail lights which are almost identical to the originals. Original lights have not been tested but temporary tow lights have been added to the rear so that it can be towed home safely.
Underbelly. It has the original aluminum underbelly which is in good condition except there are some very small oxidation holes mainly around some of the screws.
Windows. Talk about a lot of windows, this trailer has 45 windows and they are all there and all original. All the windows do have the original operators and all the windows have the original safety latches complete with all the knobs. Call me lazy if you want but I did not check the operation of every window. There are storm windows for every single window and all the glass is good except for 2 frames which need new glass. There should be 17 screens for the windows, however there are only 11 screens so six are missing. These could easily be duplicated by any glass shop. All windows have old seals which should be replaced with new. There is no broken, cracked or missing glass.
INTERIOR
The interior of this trailer is very nice, very original, very intact and just plain cool! This Spartan gets it’s model name of Carousel from the sparkling circular kitchen and dining area. The circular kitchen comes complete with a snack bar which still has the original wrought iron frame bar chairs. The interior of this trailer needs a good cleaning but is in very good condition overall, with a little TLC it could be fabulous.
Cabinet and closet doors. Has all of the original closets cabinet doors and drawers. I am amazed that the original kitchen cabinets have never been painted, which is awesome. There are two lower kitchen cabinet doors that the veneer is splintering at the bottom and both the kitchen and bathroom cabinets should be refinished.
Catches. Still has all of the original latches which are in working condition.
Countertops. Has the original curved kitchen countertop which is white with the gold speckles. There is one corner where about 4 inches of the edge trim is missing. The bathroom countertop is original and in good condition but has been shortened so that they could add a hook up for a washing machine. The countertops in the rear bedroom are original and in good condition. This countertop has fluorescent lights within it with a glass cover on top.
Floor. The floor is solid in all areas.
Floor covering. There is carpet in the living room and bedroom which is in poor condition. There is linoleum in the kitchen and bath area which is not original but is still in pretty good condition.
Table. No, but there is a dining area across from the kitchen sink which has plenty of room for a small table and chairs.
Unit sleeps. This is a one bedroom model, however, there would be plenty of room for up to six persons to sleep.
Walls. Has the grooved Birch paneling on the walls with Redtrend finish. Ceiling has the smooth birch panels with 4 inch wide hardwood trim in the living area. All panels are in good condition.
RUNNING GEAR
Has the original running gear with the exception of six brand new tires. All wheel bearings have been inspected and repacked and electric brakes are working on all three axles. I would feel comfortable having this trailer towed any distance. We had this trailer towed almost 500 miles with no problems. NOTE* Since this is a 10’ wide trailer, DOT permits need to be gotten to transport it. For that reason, I would highly recommend hiring a transport company to move it even though it is quite costly. We can provide the name and phone number of a transport company that can transport it.
Axles and springs. Original and in good condition. Have surface rust but everything appears to be good and solid.
Dry weight. 12,400#.
Hitch ball height. Approximately 20 inches.
Safety chains. No.
Hitch weight. Approximately 1300 pounds.
Hitch ball size. 2 5/16 inch.
Hubcaps. Yes. Has the original hubcaps which are in decent condition.
Spare tire. No.
Tire condition. Has six brand new 14.5 inch 12 ply Tires mounted on original non-split rims with six lugs on 5 1/2 inch bolt circle.
FURNISHINGS
Most of the original freestanding furnishings are no longer with trailer. However, this trailer still has the original doorbell on the interior of the trailer. It looks to be complete but it is not currently working. The outside push button is missing but it was pretty basic so I’m confident something could be found for it. The original Howard Miller clock is still in the trailer and it still works. Howard Miller is a famous clockmaker which has been in business since 1926.
ELECTRICAL
Has the original electric system which used a three wire grounded wiring system with metal junction boxes. There is currently a 6’ long 3 wire cord with ground which will either need a 50 amp plug or would need to be hard wired directly to the 240 volt power supply. Spartan used high quality copper wiring in the electrical system. The breaker box has 10 automatic reset circuit breakers and has a 50 amp rating. Most of the lights and electrical outlets are in working condition.
110 V lights. It has most of the original light fixtures but a few new ones have been added. All lights are In working condition with the exception of the fluorescent lights in the bathroom and a dining area light. The fluorescent lights in the bathroom work some of the time so I’m guessing the bulbs or starters are going bad.
12 V lights. No.
Brakes. Yes. It has electric brakes on all three axles which are in working condition. Breakaway switch. Yes. Has a brand new Tekonsha brand breakaway kit with battery. Converter. No.
Interior fans. Yes. There are three fans in this trailer and all do work but the fan over the stove is a little noisy.
Plug for exterior lights. Yes. It has a brand new seven way plug like most current RVs use.
Porch light. No.
RV battery. No.
LP system. This trailer was probably hooked to 100 pound or larger tanks since it was designed for full-time living. The gas lines are still intact and we hooked them up to a smaller tank temporarily in order to test the gas appliances.
Automatic changeover. No.
Furnace. Yes. Has the original Inter-therm brand heater which operates on LP gas. Un-tested.
Gas bottles. No.
Gas lights. No.
Gas regulator. No.
Range / oven. Yes, has the original Dixie brand wall oven then a separate Dixie brand four burner gas cooktop which is also original. The oven is complete with all knobs and grates but I could not get it to light. The cooktop has all the original knobs burners and grates are in good condition and all four burners do light.
Refrigerator. Yes. Has older Crosley brand refrigerator, which is not original. We plugged it in and turned it on and it did cool.
Water heater. Yes. The water heater is located inside the trailer but there is a special door on the exterior driver side of the trailer to gain access to service or replace the water heater. The water heater is a newer True Value brand Water heater with glass lining. We know the tank is good because we air tested the water system but we did not test the heating element because it is 240 V and only had the trailer hooked to 110 V. 40 gallons.
PLUMBING
Has most of the original plumbing with copper fresh water lines and brass and steel drains. There Is one new pex line going to the tub and a newer PVC Line where the washer hook up was added. All freshwater lines were tested with air and we found no cracked lines. However, some of the faucets may need to be replaced or have new seals because we could hear air leaking through some faucets.
Air pump. No.
Freshwater tank. No.
Kitchen sink. Yes. Has the original two bowl kitchen sink which is nice and deep. The porcelain is in good condition but has been touched up in a couple of areas.
Lavatory. Has the original pink lavatory. It has lots of large chips in the porcelain that have been touched up and some actual rust holes where those chips are. I’m not sure if those guys who refinished sinks and tubs could save this one or not.
Sewer holding tank. No.
Shower. Yes, has the original tub shower combo. It has a newer 4 position showerhead. Toilet. Yes. It has the original Kilgore brand pink toilet. The toilet and tank appear to be in good condition but the tank lid has some cracks that have been repaired.
Tub. Has the original 53 inch long pink bathtub the porcelain is in good shape except for a spot at the rear top edge of the tub which has been touched up. The tub walls have been updated with newer white Marlite with gold specks and the original folding shower door is there and in decent condition.
Waste holding tank. No.
Water intake valve. Yes.
Water pump. No.
Special. This trailer is special indeed. The sparkling circular kitchen and dining area of the Carousel refreshingly capture the spirit of contemporary living. Warm friendliness and informality are suggested by the snack bar with the original wrought iron frame chairs. The built-in oven is framed by Coppertone aluminum. If you have been looking for a nice original Spartan Carousel, here is your chance to own one. Most of the Carousels that I have seen have been modernized to the point where most of the original character is gone. That is not the case with this one, it is very original and very complete. This trailer comes with a professionally reproduced Spartan Carousel brochure from 1959. There were a few changes from 1959 to 1960 but the floorplan remain basically the same.
